Wellness
Using supplements sensibly
Supplements work best alongside the everyday habits that keep you well. Here is how we think about them, and what to consider before adding one to your routine.
Supplements complement a healthy lifestyle
We believe that maintaining good wellbeing involves making thoughtful daily choices: proper nutrition, an active lifestyle, adequate rest, and responsible use of nutritional supplements. A supplement is exactly what the name says — something that adds to a diet, not something that replaces it.
That is also why we present our products the way we do. Each page tells you what the formula contains, what the manufacturer states it is for, and what the directions and cautions on the pack say. What you do with that information is your decision, ideally taken with advice from someone qualified to give it.
Before you start
Four things worth checking
Read the label first
Serving size, ingredient amounts and directions are all printed on the pack. Check them before you take the first dose, and follow what the pack says rather than a general rule.
Talk to a professional
If you are pregnant or nursing, taking medication, managing a health condition or preparing for surgery, speak with a doctor or pharmacist before starting any supplement.
Be consistent, not excessive
More is not better. Stick to the directions on the pack. Taking several products at once can mean doubling up on the same nutrient without realising it.
Store them properly
Most of our products state that they should be kept in a cool, dry place and out of the reach of children. Check the seal is intact before first use.
Understanding the range
What the different categories are for
Our catalogue is grouped by the area each formula is made for. Here is what those groupings mean in plain terms.
Vitamins and multivitamins
Single vitamins such as C, D3, E and B12 provide one nutrient at a defined strength. A multivitamin brings many nutrients together in one daily dose.
Minerals
Minerals such as magnesium, selenium, calcium and zinc are nutrients the body needs in small amounts. The form a mineral comes in affects how well it is absorbed.
Amino acids
Amino acids are the building blocks of protein. Some are described as conditionally essential, meaning the body may need more of them at certain times.
Herbal and botanical formulas
Formulas built around plant extracts — ginkgo, saw palmetto, chaste tree berry, maca, berberine and green tea among them.
Targeted wellness
Products formulated for a specific area, such as women's wellness, men's wellness, heart and circulation, or rest in the evening.
Antioxidant support
Formulas such as NAC and green tea extract that the manufacturer describes in terms of free radical protection and cellular health.
